Welcome to Lesson 2: Overview of CARTA
-
CARTA Overview video page
The purpose of this lesson is to ensure that the GGWW participant understands the timeline, activities and expectations of the GGWW.
Please complete this lesson by viewing the entire 'book' activity. This and the following lessons (4 and 5) will give you a much fuller idea of the amount of work involved to come prepared for the residential writing retreat. Please also ensure that you have entered into your personal calendar the deadlines and activities of the GGWW. Also block off in your calendar sufficient time to do the preparatory work (literature review and draft materials) before you arrive at the residential writing retreat in late October.
Included here is the program for the in-person writing retreat (posted at the start of this Moodle course.
Note that there may be changes to the program. Please refer to official correspondence you have received and also the Resources section of this Moodle course.
Documenting progress: Please manually mark these activities as done when you have completed them.

The purpose of this lesson is to guide the GGWW participant through:
1) review of literature and preparation of a background and rationale for the proposed research; and
2) developing expertise in the research methods that will be applied in the grant proposal being developed.
Please read through the materials provided in the first activity which is a moodle "book" providing an overview of these activities.
Then complete the activities that follow.
This lesson has two REQUIRED activities and an optional activity.
These activities will take a considerable amount of time to complete when one includes the effort involved preparing the literature review and time needed to find and use external reference materials.
Required activities are two "Moodle Questionnaire" activities.
- A Moodle Questionnaire activity, which asks participants to provide a summary of progress and reflection on the development of the background and literature review
- A Moodle Questionnaire activity, which asks participants to write a brief summary of progress in developing research plans and accessing resources on methods
The optional activity (but encouraged) is to view and contribute to a jointly-developed, annotated bibliography of reference resources specifically for research study designs.
- To participate, click the link provided and this will take you to a Google Sheets document, which all users can edit. To participate fully, please glance through the workbook and note that it has several tabs. Make at least ONE additional review or addition. Alternatively, you can add suggestions in the Questionnaire activity where it asks about recommended resources.
Note that the document has been used in a prior workshop and unrelated courses. Participants may download it for future reference, but should not redistribute it beyond workshop participants.
